The Town Today

Located in the south of Central Bedfordshire, Houghton Regis is currently a medium sized town of approximately 19,773 residents, and around 7,500 properties (Census 2021). The town is divided into three parish wards: Houghton Hall, Parkside and Tithe Farm.

Currently the town is served by Bedford Square shopping centre, a large Morrisons supermarket, two petrol stations and many neighbourhood shops, a wide range of local businesses and professional services, 8 schools and Central Bedfordshire college, a leisure centre, medical practitioners, library, various community facilities including the Memorial Hall, and plenty of open spaces, parks and recreation grounds and sporting facilities.

In the 1960s and 1970s, when the housing estates of Tithe Farm and Parkside were built, the town changed beyond recognition going from a rural village into a small town in a short space of time. The town faces a similar challenge as we are set to double in size by 2030. Development is wide spread across the northern boundary in areas known as Linmere and Bidwell and will incorporate housing, employment, retail, industry, education, community facilities and open space and recreation provision.

Busy and exciting times for Houghton Regis.
