Every October the Annual Pride of Houghton Awards are held. The scheme recognises residents from the town who have made a big contribution to the local community. Councillor Wattingham officially opened the event and presented the certificates to the event sponsors. Guests at the event included the Vice Chairman of Central Bedfordshire Council, Councillor Brian Saunders, the Deputy Mayor of Ampthill, Councillor Ian Titman and Past Mayor of Dunstable, Councillor Liz Jones.
During the evening, Councillor Wattingham also made the Honorary Freeman Presentation. Unfortunately, the recipient, Mrs. Beryl Morton was unable to attend the Ceremony, so the award was presented to her a few days later.
Councillor Wattingham also hosted an ‘Evening at the Circus’ on 16th October, as part of John Lawson’s Circus annual visit to the Village Green. A party of 70 people attended the performance, which included the Mayor of Leighton-Linslade, the Mayor’ of Ampthill and the Mayor of Sandy. The “children of all ages” thoroughly enjoyed the evening, which raised funds towards the Mayor’s charities.
Other events in October included the Disability Resource Centre Open Day, Coffee Mornings in aid of Macmillan hosted by Houghton Regis Helpers and Houghton Regis Craft and Coffee, A Charity Bingo Evening, Mayor of Sandy’s Civic Service, Luton Community Awards, Headway Thank you Party, the Launch of the Houghton Regis Poppy Appeal and Craft and Coffee Craft Fair (with Andrew Selous, MP), a visit to the 1st/3rd Houghton Regis Scout Group Camp and a presentation to Kathy Doran from Morestaff/Allenday as she was unable to attend the Pride of Houghton Awards.
