Houghton Regis is a small town with a population of approximately 17,000 people.It lies within the county of Bedfordshire and is governed by the Town Council and the new Unitary Authority of Central Bedfordshire.

The beginnings of Houghton Regis date back to Roman times and this ancient past is illustrated by its name, taken from the Saxon ‘Hoe’, the spur of a hill, and ‘Tun’, a village with Regis being added in the time of Edward the Confessor when it became a royal manor.

Central Bedfordshire Council has approved a new contractor to run Houghton Leisure Centre following a decision by the authority's Executive today (14 February.

The new contract will begin from April 1st and will ensure that the centre, previously earmarked for closure, will continue to operate throughout 2012/13.

This decision is the conclusion of partnership working between Central Bedfordshire Council, Houghton Regis Town Council and the Centre's Action Group.

The Houghton Regis Carnival will be taking place on Saturday 7th July 2012 on the Village Green. The theme of the event is ‘Treasure Island' and there will lots of activities planned throughout the day.

The street procession will be leaving Kings Houghton Middle School on Parkside Drive at 10.30am before winding its way through the streets of the town, to arrive on the Village Green between 11.45am and 12 Noon.

 

There will be lots of interesting stalls on the Village Green, ranging from arts and crafts and handmade jewellery,to games and activities, tombola, charity stalls and car boot stalls. There will be lots of refreshments available including tea, coffee and cake in the pavilion from the Houghton Regis W.I.

 

The day would not be complete without some fabulous arena displays and starting it all of this year is the 'Pet Dog of the Year Competition' which is being organised by the Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust.
